SKU Code: CHR20/SS/HY
The MWC NATO chronograph in a stainless steel case follows the same basic specifications used by other leading manufacturers of NATO chronographs, but with several improvements for better operation and visibility. Although designed to meet the needs of military aircrews, it is also ideal for airline and general aviation (GA) pilots. The case measures 45.5mm and is powered by a high-performance VK68 hybrid movement.
This chronograph includes a 24-hour (military time) sub-dial, an important feature specified for a contract to help personnel working extended periods without natural daylight.
Key Features of the Hybrid Movement
The primary difference between this hybrid watch and a mechanical chronograph is in its movement. Mechanical watches are powered by a mainspring, regulated by a balance wheel, and controlled by a set of precision levers, hammers, and gears. This hybrid chronograph, on the other hand, is powered by a battery, regulated by a quartz crystal, but still utilizes mechanical components to control the chronograph functions. Essentially, it combines the best of both mechanical and quartz movements—offering the feel of a mechanical watch with the accuracy of quartz.
The VK68 movement is factory-rated for accuracy at +/- 20 seconds per month, although we often find it performs better. This level of accuracy is vastly superior to traditional mechanical chronographs, which are typically accurate to only +/- 2 or 3 seconds per day.
Low Maintenance and High Durability
One of the greatest advantages of the hybrid chronograph is its low maintenance requirements. It needs significantly less upkeep compared to mechanical chronographs and is far less prone to reliability issues in the long run. For many, the biggest appeal is that this watch feels and operates just like a traditional mechanical model, yet with the added benefit of quartz precision.
When we refer to this watch as a hybrid, it’s because the movement is powered by a battery and quartz oscillator, but the chronograph functions are mechanically actuated and controlled. Push the start/stop button, and the second hand steps into action—just like a mechanical movement would. The timing hand moves in 1/5-second increments, and the crisp feel of the buttons mimics the response of a high-end mechanical chronograph. Our watchmaker even mistook the movement for a Valjoux 7750 upon first inspection.
These models are perfect for those who own multiple watches, as they don’t need to be wound before use. Simply replace the battery every few years and check the water resistance.
A Silent Operator
One unique feature is the lack of a ticking sound, which can confuse many people. Even our team at MWC found it difficult to distinguish between this hybrid and a mechanical watch, based purely on its behavior. This truly offers the best of both technologies in one remarkable timepiece.
