Military pocket watches, along with their civilian counterparts, are experiencing a significant resurgence in popularity. Historically, they were widely used in land-based, airborne, and naval operations. During World War II, these watches were employed by both Axis and Allied forces, including the German Wehrmacht, Kriegsmarine, Luftwaffe, and British and American forces. The primary reason for their popularity was that wristwatches of the time were generally small, with an average diameter of just 32mm, making them difficult to read. In contrast, military pocket watches featured larger cases, often around 50mm, which made them much easier to read.
This classic WW2-style Aeschbach* military pocket watch features a small subsidiary second-hand dial, closely based on designs issued by the German Luftwaffe and authorized by the Reichsluftfahrtministerium (RLM / German Air Ministry). These watches were mission-issued and returned to the quartermaster upon the pilot’s return to base. Although original Aeschbach WW2 watches are now rare and command high prices, this modern version is nearly indistinguishable from the factory's wartime models. It includes a traditional 17-jewel hand-wound movement and has been updated with a durable glass crystal, which is superior to the easily scratched acrylic/plastic used in World War II models.
During WWII, numerous Swiss and German manufacturers produced watches for the Wehrmacht, Kriegsmarine, and Luftwaffe, including Aeschbach, which was founded in 1923 and continues to operate today.
